The most fascinating thing about Egypt is its ability to astonish with its music that reflects such idealistic diversity. Highly developed music was an essential element of religious worship in ancient Egypt, and had a vital role in the religious rituals, hymns and prayers. Music therapy has been known since ancient times, when ancient man used singing and dancing as a part of his rituals to throw out the evil spirits, which were waiting to attack him.
The Egyptian music has been the core of the Egyptian culture; it has become very important not only in the daily life but professionally talking. Egypt is very famous in its TV series and cinema movies that are based almost all the time on the Egyptian music. You rarely watch a movie that doesn’t include musical parts. In addition to the festivals, ceremonies, and traditional parties that embrace the musical pulses.
Most musical scenes show dancers accompanied by musicians playing instruments. Egypt has been recognized by its musical instruments such as the Rababah, a spike fiddle traditionally used to accompany poetry; Zummarah (Egyptian version of Mijwiz, the Lebanese instrument) this instrument has two identical reed tubes, each tube has five or six holes and a smaller tube inside which vibrates to produce the sound, it is played using a circular breathing technique which produces a continuous sound, unlike a flute.
Great artists traced the history of the Egyptian music. Farid al-Atrache appeared as a multi-talented star who captured women´s hearts as a leading man, composed music that became instant hits throughout the Arabic world, and played the Oud. Another artist who rose to fame and popularity was Mohammed Abdel Wahab, an actor, singer, composer, lyricist and musician, his baritone rendering of the classical poetry from the ‘golden age’. Abdel Halim Hafez puzzled listeners with his soft lilting voice and romantic verses he became known as the ‘Nightingale of the Nile’, many of his songs written for films have a jazz Hollywood mood. Even today, several decades after his death, he is widely adored and listened to. Oum Kalthoum was especially popular, and is considered the most successful Egyptian recording artist in history.
The newly Egyptian stars have grown numerously just as: Angham, Sherine Wagdy, Wael Mansour, Hossam Habib, Yasser a new breed of Arab world music stars, they mix the contemporary and classical forms with a freedom known only to her generation to produce the modern Arab song. Amr Diab having shaped and formed the pop music of Egypt over the past fifteen years, he is the pop superstar of the Arab world and a role model for an emerging youth. Along with many singers who not only are famous in singing but in acting as well (& vice versa): Shereen, Ruby, Yousra, Shadia, Soad Hosny…
Mohamed Fouad, Hani Shaker, Hamada Helal, Mostafa Amar …each having their own style that has perfectly reached the public minds and became distinguished differently.
The Egyptian Music from ancient times till our modern day has always been in constant improvement and so will continue to engrave the history of Egypt.
