By Jennifer Waters, MarketWatch CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- ugg bootsConsumers worried that their Toyotas could be safety nightmares will need to make plans to get their car into a Toyota dealer at the first opportunity. But with millions of cars involved in two recalls, the fixes may require patience on the part of car owners. Keep in mind that not every Toyota model recalled has a gas pedal that sticks or a floor mat that traps the pedal. The carmaker is targeting some 4.8 million cars to correct the problems but insists the conditions are rare. "If drivers experience any issues with their accelerator pedals, they should contact their dealer without delay," said Brian Lyons, a spokesman for Toyota's domestic operations. "If they are not experiencing any issues, Toyota is confident that (its) vehicles are safe to drive." Recent reports out of China suggest that 270,000 Prius have been recalled because of electronic issues with braking -- a problem Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak made a very public statement about earlier this week. That followed a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statement that it is evaluating 124 complaints about the braking issue. Toyota's U.S. division has only said that it's aware of the NHTSA investigation and that it has already evaluated the problem and made changes to correct it. At this point, there are two Ugg Coquette Sandals recalls in the works: the sticking pedals announced late last month and the October recall of cars with pedals trapped by floor mats, which is tied to 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus cars. Some vehicles have both problems. Look at the Toyota Web site, www.toyota.com/recall, for more information and directions on what to do if your pedal sticks or there's a problem with the floor mats. If yours is among those cars with these issues, you'll get a notification from Toyota directing you to take your car to the nearest dealer. Even without the notice in hand, apprehensive consumers can take their cars in. But remember that the dealers too are overwhelmed with calls and complaints. "My advice is if you have one of these vehicles, if you have a doubt, take it to Toyota today," Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters Tuesday after a hearing on Capitol Hill. "NHTSA will continue to hold Toyota's feet to the fire to make sure that they are doing everything they have promised to make their vehicles safe," he said. "We will continue to investigate all possible causes of these safety issues." Correcting the faults Toyota is conducting its own investigations and has come up with some solutions for the problems. The pedal recall involves autos whose accelerators may have mechanical issues that make them stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position, according to Toyota. Sales have been temporarily suspended on eight models of new cars and production halted at some of the North American plants until the problems have been fixed. The company is having new pedals made to replace the faulty ones but also has a repair program underway until then. Toyota owners can get both the remedy now and then have the pedal replaced when it's available. The floor-mat recall involves pedals that have been stuck because of mats that were incorrectly made or out of place on the floor. Pedals are being reconfigured and mats replaced. But until then, remove the mats and don't replace them.
